Auction information

Registration is FREE and may be made through the USVSA auction site, by email, fax, mail or phone. Register early as only registered bidders will be able to place a bid and assures you of receiving auction news as it develops.

Be sure to use the physical address (Do Not use a P.O. Box) you will want your items shipped to and a phone number the shipping company can reach you at during business hours.

Do Not use your real name for your 'user name' (bidders name). Use something meaningful to you like waverider or surf72...you get the idea.

Auction information changes

The auction information page, as well as other pages within the web site, can change leading up to auction day.  So please be sure to reread this page, and any other applicable pages, at least one time before you bid.

Auction Time Clocks

All auction starting and ending times are based on U.S.A Pacific Standard Time (PST).

On the home page of the web site you will find a clock that counts down in days, hours and minutes to the start of the next auction.

On the side bar you will find the link to 'World Times' which will show you the time in different countries around the world.  We hope this will help you to never miss an auction.

Without exception, your email address and personal information will not be shared with anyone for any reason.  In addition, we will not send you any emails that are not related to USVSA auctions.

We accept checks, money orders, cashier's checks and bank wire transfers.  You can pay with a credit card but only through the secure Paypal.com web site.  Keep in mind when deciding how to pay that you can receive a 3% discount on your buyer's premium (making it 10%) when you pay by bank wire, check or postal money order.  All other forms of payment will carry our standard 13% buyer's premium.

Payment is to be sent within 2 days from receipt of the invoice. Items will not be shipped until payment is made in full and funds have cleared.

Bank wire transfer and credit card are the quickest way to get the items you won shipped to you.  All other forms of payment are subject to mailing time.  Checks clear (10 business days) before items ship.  There will be a $25 fee for any returned or bounced checks.

In many cases winning bidders will be asked to pay for their auction and shipping expenses separately.  Immediately following the auction you may receive an invoice for lots won and applicable fees.  Once items have been packed and shipping quotes received a second invoice will be sent out.  Buyers are expected and agree to pay for each invoice within 2 days of receipt.

Payments made from outside the U.S. must be made by bank wire transfer only.

Pre-Auction Estimates

Estimates have been determined by using sales from previous auctions, private sales and expert knowledge prior to publication of the auction. These are only estimates in a range of prices the item might bring. This is for purposes of a helpful guide for prospective bidders. Be aware that it is common for the rare and unusual to sell for far more than a pre-auction estimate so be sure to bid accordingly.

Reserves and No Reserve

The February 21, 2009 auction is entirely No Reserve!

Unlike other auction houses, you will notice that most or all of the items offered at a US Vintage Surf Auction will have 'No Reserve'.  When you see 'No Reserve' next to the 'Pre-auction estimate', that means that item will sell to the highest bidder regardless of the final price.

While most items are offered with no reserve, others must have a reserve to protect an owners' investment. Many of the special items would not be made available for sale without a reserve. Usually the low estimate will reflect the reserve.

All lots will be available for viewing prior to the start of the auction. The auction period for each lot will be at least one week, allowing plenty of time for your consideration and questions.

The actual closing time on items in the auction will be automatically extended when bids are placed at or near the closing time and will continue to extend until all bidding has ceased for a predetermined period of time (see Auto Auction Extension)

Online Bidding with USVSA

At the bottom of each auction page is a box in which to place your bid.  After you 'Place Bid' on the first page, you will be taken to the next page where you review and confirm the bid before it is actually placed in the system.  Be sure to follow the steps to the end.

You will receive email notices when you place a bid.  If you do not receive the email notice one of several things may have occurred.  You may not have completed the bidding process within the web site or perhaps the USVSA mail is going into your spam or junk folders.

In the event you have been outbid, you will also receive an email notice. This will give you the opportunity to place another bid before the auction closes.

IMPORTANT: It's always wise to check the status of any auctions you're interested in.  Some people will bid in the last few moments or even seconds in hopes of eliminating competition.  This technique is called sniping. Click 'learn about sniping' to find out more.

We strongly urge you to watch items you're hoping to win as the auction draws to a close.

Proxy Bids

Many people prefer to place 'proxy' bids and here's how it works. You place a bid for the maximum amount you're willing to pay. Your maximum bid amount is kept confidential from other bidders. The USVSA system automatically places bids on your behalf, using only as much of your bid as is necessary to outbid the next highest bidder or to meet the reserve price.

In no event will the proxy bid system ever bid beyond your maximum. However, if you choose to increase your maximum you can do so at any time simply by placing another bid.

If another bidder has a higher maximum, you will be outbid. If there are no other bidders with a higher maximum, you will win the item at the lowest possible increment. So you could pay significantly less than your maximum price! This means you don't have to keep coming back to re-bid every time another bid is placed.

However, you should be aware of auction snipes; we suggest you read this page snipe and auction extension

'Absentee' Proxy Bidding

If for any reason you are not able to place bids online with USVSA we can assist with 'Proxy' Bids. Simply call us soon as possible with your bidding instructions.

To avoid losing out, we would urge you to place these bids as early as possible for the highest amount you are willing to pay.

While we will do our best to notify you in the event you are outbid, we suggest you check back regularly, particularly in the last hour to see the status of your bids.

If you need to increase a bid you can try calling but be advised you may have trouble reaching us near the end of the auction as we'll be very busy. So we suggest you call as early as possible and place the highest proxy bid you can.

Phone Assisted Bidding

At your request, we will give you a personalized call to remind you the auction is closing.  We will also call you a few minutes before the lot(s) you're interested in close.  We will inform you of the current price and assist you in placing bids as needed.  For more on this service see the 'Phone assisted bidding' page located on the side bar.

Upon placing a winning bid you have entered into a contract to purchase that item on the terms and conditions contained herein. All sales are final at close of the auction on the item being bid on. Winning bidder can not retract his bid. All sales are final. However, a bid is not a sale when it is less than a minimum reserve on that item. Items that do not meet reserve will not be considered sold unless seller agrees to accept the high bid. It is the responsibility of the winning bidder to insure his purchases immediately following close of the auction.

Immediately following the close of auction: if you have won one or more surfboards; Take a moment to visit our page on Surfboard Packing Info and let us know if you would like packing option A, B or C.
If we don't hear from you within 24 hours from the close of auction, you will be billed for option B.

Closing costs

When paying with a wire transfer, check or postal money order, you will receive a 3% discount on your buyers premium, making your premium 10%.  All items at auction are subject to a buyers premium of 13% of the final sales price.  Items shipping in or to Hawaii will be subject to the 4.166% Hawaii general excise tax.

Payment may be made with checks, money orders, cashiers check, bank wire transfer or credit cards when paid through the secure website at Paypal.com.  Buyers outside the United States must pay by bank wire transfer only.  Buyers are responsible for any cost associated with packing, shipping, insurance, import duty or taxes.

Packing and Shipping

USVSA will handle the packing and assist in shipping of items by buyer's preferred method or by whatever method USVSA deems best if buyer has not stated a preference.  Shipping costs are calculated by dimensional size or weight, item origin and destination as well as final sales price.
US Vintage Surf Auction does not make any money on shipping: we assist you at no profit to us. The range of cost to ship surfboards could be from as little as $50 to $375 or more depending on the above factors.  Items shipping outside the United States will be substantially more.  Because there are many variables in determining shipping cost, particularly in the case of surfboards, USVSA can assist in determining actual shipping charges after close of the auction.  The cost of shipping will be the responsibility of the buyer. When items are subject to an import duty or tax, it will be the responsibility of the buyer to pay any when applicable. Where buyer has not requested a specific shipping method, USVSA will use its best effort to use a shipping method that best suits each situation.  We have shipped thousands of various items and hundreds of surfboards worldwide.  USVSA will not be responsible for any loss or damage that occurs in shipping.  It is the buyer's responsibility to obtain any insurance they may require and to file claims should the need arise. Be advised that many shipping companies will not insure antique, rare or one of a kind items.  At the discretion of USVSA, surfboards may ship c.o.d. to the buyer; otherwise shipping cost must be paid to USVSA before the item is shipped. Most non surfboard items will carry a $5-10 packing fee to cover labor and materials.  Some particularly large or bulky items like paintings, lamps, trophies, etc., will incur a much higher packing fee and it is the buyers responsibility to pay any packing fees incurred.  If it will make a difference to your bidding strategy you should inquire before you bid. Cost to pack surfboards varies and will be up to the winning bidder to let USVSA know which packing method option you choose: see 'Surfboard Packing Info'.  When the winning bidder has not notified USVSA of a selected packing option, option B will be selected by default.  Once funds are received by USVSA and have cleared, items are then packed and will ship on the following Wednesday or Thursday after packing.

Please be patient on receiving the items you have won, particularly surfboards.  Keep in mind that funds must clear before we release your lots for shipping.  Payments that have been wired or paid by credit card through Paypal, (the only way we accept credit cards), will ship the quickest.  Postal money order would be the next fasted payment to clear.  Checks take 10 business days to clear.  Keep in mind, the sooner you get your payment to us, the sooner your lots will ship.  Surfboards will take longer than non surfboard items to arrive to you.  Because we ship by the most cost effective method to save you money, surfboards do not ship by air.  Depending on the point of origin and final destination, boards can arrive weeks after they have been dropped with the shipper.  Please be patient when receiving surfboards.

Condition of items sold

All lots are sold as is, where is, with all faults. All items should be examined and questions asked prior to bidding. Descriptions of items appearing in prior advertising are believed to be correct. However, descriptions or any oral statements made by the auctioneer, his agents or officers concerning any item shall not be construed as a warranty, either expressed or implied.

Your bidding will signify that you have examined the items and asked any questions to your satisfaction, or that you have chosen not to examine or ask questions. The bidder examined the merchandise and accepts it as is. We do not photo shop the images, only cut out to have solid uniform background.  However, in some cases it is possible that the item may not appear exactly as seen in the photos. Written and oral descriptions are our opinions and should in no way be construed as a guarantee of any kind as to age, condition, materials, authenticity or any other feature of the items being sold. The buyer relies solely on his own information and inspection.

We recommend prospective bidders examine all items in which they have an interest. If you require absolute certainty in all areas of authenticity, and the results of your evaluation leave uncertainty in your mind, we recommend you not bid on the item in question. We do not give refunds for any reason. The winning bidder becomes the owner of the item immediately at the close of bidding and shall remit payment in full when asked to do so by USVSA. The auctioneer is not responsible for error. All sales are final.

No statement written or oral made by the auctioneer shall be deemed a warranty or assumption of liability by USVintageSurfAuction.com, USVSA.com or any other name used to promote this auction, including any sponsors or by any sellers represented by USVintageSurfAuction.com, USVSA.com or any other name used to promote this auction. Our printed materials and online descriptions are meant merely as a guide, not a guarantee.
